About the atelier
A Heritage Stitched in Petaling Jaya
Since 1980, three generations of the Wong family have cut cloth in Selangor. Today Lanwin Tailor carries that legacy forward, dressing the Klang Valley in garments built for its tropical climate.
From a Shop House in PJ to a Bespoke Institution
Lanwin Tailor began in 1980 when Louis Wong's grandfather, a Shanghainese immigrant, opened a modest shop house on the edge of Petaling Jaya. His motivation was simple: craft garments that gave the local working class and emerging businessmen the confidence that only a perfectly fitted suit can deliver. That original block and measuring book are still archived in our studio today.
Through the 1980s and 90s, the atelier stitched uniforms for local banks, school principals, and the first wave of Selangor's corporate executives. Word-of-mouth carried the business through three generations, and the cutting table on Lorong PJU3 has quietly become part of the neighbourhood's history.
The Lanwin Tailor Standard
Louis took the helm after more than a decade apprenticing under his father, modernising silhouettes while fiercely protecting the hand-stitched techniques that define true bespoke tailoring. The atelier maintains an uncompromising commitment to full-floating canvas construction, hand-padded lapels, and comprehensive basted fittings. No fused fronts, no shortcuts.
Our cutter Ridzuan trained through the Savile Row Academy programme, and our team combines Shanghainese drafting with British construction. Every client leaves with a personalised pattern block, refined across sessions and archived for a lifetime of future commissions.
Built for the Klang Valley
Petaling Jaya is our home. We know what it takes to look sharp walking across Oasis Square in the midday sun and then sit through a three-hour meeting in the freezing AC of a Damansara Uptown boardroom. That is why we curate high-twist tropical wools, breathable linens, and half-lined constructions designed specifically for Malaysia's humidity.
Every garment we build is tested against the climate our clients actually live in, not the showrooms of cooler countries. A Lanwin Tailor suit is engineered to breathe on the Federal Highway commute, recover from a sudden monsoon shower, and still photograph beautifully at a Bandar Utama wedding.
