Bespoke Suits Hand-Built in Petaling Jaya Since 1980
Every bespoke suit from Lanwin Tailor is drafted, cut, and hand-finished inside our private atelier in Petaling Jaya. Louis Wong leads every commission personally, drawing on three generations of Shanghainese drafting technique and uncompromising bespoke standards. From high-twist tropical wools to unlined linen jackets, each suit is engineered for the humidity of Selangor and the freezing corporate air-conditioning our clients move through every day.

Why Bespoke Still Matters for Petaling Jaya’s Executives
A bespoke suit is no longer a luxury relic in PJ, it is a working tool. The professionals who commission suits from our Lorong PJU3 studio spend their days crossing the Federal Highway traffic, walking through a carpark on a 33 degree afternoon, then stepping into a freezing boardroom at a multinational HQ. Off-the-rack jackets and fused made-to-measure suits from shopping mall brands cannot handle that transition, and Klang Valley humidity punishes any garment that is built without thought for the climate.
At Lanwin Tailor we have spent 46 years learning how a suit behaves on Petaling Jaya shoulders. Louis Wong is the third generation of his family to cut cloth in this city, and the house block he works from has been refined continuously since his grandfather opened the original shop in 1980. That archive, combined with the uncompromising bespoke standards Louis trained under, is what separates a Lanwin commission from anything you will find in a mall fitting room.
The Lanwin House Cut
Every bespoke suit begins with a conversation in our private fitting lounge, not a measuring tape. We ask how you move through your week, where you sit for long meetings, whether you ride the LRT or drive into Section 14, and how the cloth needs to feel against your shirt. Only then does Ridzuan Hashim, our senior cutter and a Savile Row Academy graduate, start drafting.
Ridzuan draws a fresh paper pattern using over thirty measurements and a series of posture observations. The pattern belongs to you and is archived under your name for every future commission. From there, David Raj takes the cut cloth through full-floating canvas construction, hand-padding the lapels and chest so that the jacket drapes from your shoulders rather than sitting stiffly on top of them. There are no fused fronts in our workroom and no shortcuts at the collar, armhole, or buttonhole stage.
Mei Ling Chen leads the fittings. Most Lanwin commissions move through a baste fitting, a forward fitting, and a final adjustment before pressing, so small issues are caught early and never compromise the finished suit.
Cloth Engineered for the Klang Valley Climate
This is where most PJ tailors lose the plot. A heavy 340 gram English worsted may look handsome in a showroom, but it wilts on the walk from Oasis Square to a lunch meeting at Jaya 33. We specialise in what we call tropical tailoring, which means we work primarily with:
- High-twist Super 110s and 120s from Vitale Barberis Canonico and Holland & Sherry, typically in the 230 to 270 gram range. They hold a crease, breathe, and recover quickly after a sudden downpour.
- Irish and Italian linens for relaxed weekend commissions and groomsmen packages, cut with unlined backs and sleeve heads that allow air to move through the jacket.
- Half-canvassed, half-lined constructions that keep the chest structure of a proper suit without trapping heat against the spine.
- Cotton and linen blends for clients who want a softer hand and a suit that travels well through the monsoon season.
Scabal, Holland & Sherry, and Vitale Barberis Canonico are all available through our authorised merchant relationships, with the full bunch of swatches kept in-studio for you to drape during the consultation.
Cost Expectations for a Bespoke Commission in PJ
There is no mystery to our pricing. Bespoke commissions at Lanwin Tailor start at RM1,800 and climb to around RM4,500 depending on the cloth you select. That figure includes the pattern draft, the cloth, all canvas and construction work, every fitting session, final pressing, and any corrective alterations that might be needed during break-in. Our journal article on what goes into the cost of a bespoke suit explains the breakdown in detail.
Clients often ask whether a bespoke suit is worth the investment compared to a RM1,200 made-to-measure job from a mall brand. The honest answer is that a properly built Lanwin suit should last well over a decade of hard wear, and because we keep your pattern and offer a lifetime alteration guarantee, the cost per wear drops sharply over time. Several of our long-standing PJ clients are still wearing suits we delivered to them in the early 2010s.
Common Mistakes We See From First-Time Commissioners
New bespoke clients often arrive with expectations shaped by menswear blogs written for London or Milan winters. Before we cut cloth, we gently correct three recurring mistakes. First, ordering a fully canvassed three-piece in heavy English worsted for daily PJ wear leaves you sweating before you reach the office door. Second, choosing an ultra-slim silhouette that photographs well in a studio but restricts movement during long lunches in Damansara Uptown. Third, rushing the fitting schedule because of an imminent wedding, instead of allowing the cloth time to relax between sessions.
We will steer you away from every one of these in your first consultation. The goal is a suit you reach for three times a week, not a trophy that hangs in the wardrobe.
